2SLGBTQIA+

“2SLGBTQIA+ is an acronym that means: 2Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual.
It includes pansexual, agender, gender queer, bigender, gender variant, and pangender.
You may also hear the terms “Queer Community” or “Rainbow Community” used to describe 2SLGBTQIA+ people. This acronym and the various terms are always evolving so don’t try to memorize the list. The most important thing is to be respectful and use the terms that people prefer.” OK2BeMe

Territorial Acknowledgement
Definition:
“Territory acknowledgement is a way that people insert an awareness of Indigenous presence and land rights in everyday life. This is often done at the beginning of ceremonies, lectures, or any public event. It can be a subtle way to recognize the history of colonialism and a need for change in settler colonial societies. All settlers, including recent arrivants, have a responsibility to consider what it means to acknowledge the history and legacy of colonialism. What are some of the privileges settlers enjoy today because of colonialism?” Native Land

Turtle Island
Definition:
“Turtle Island might sound like some far away island in the sea, but it's actually what some Indigenous people call the continent of North America, while others, such as the Ojibwa, use it to refer to the whole world. “ CBC Kids
Some Nations believe that the Creator of all things flooded the Earth because the people couldn’t get along and were fighting. In one version, only the animals and Nanabush (or Nanabozho), a spirit that appears in many Ojibwa (say “oh-JIB-wah”) legends, survived. He has an Anishinaabe (say "uh-NISH-ih-NAH-bay") mother and a spirit father, so he is half spirit and half human.” CBC Kids
“Following Christopher Columbus' arrival in North America [Turtle Island] in 1492, violence and disease killed 90% of the indigenous population — nearly 55 million people — according to a study published this year. A little over a century later, that number had dropped close to 6 million. “ Insider Magazine

Trauma and Violence Informed Care
Definition:
“Trauma and Violence Informed Care (TVIC) improves how service providers and organizations serve clients who have experienced traumatic life events. TVIC does not focus on encouraging clients to disclose details of trauma they have experienced or on treating their trauma symptoms. Instead, TVIC fosters an environment where all clients feel safe and there is less possibility they will be traumatized again. TVIC recognizesthe impacts of individual trauma (e.g., sexual abuse, physical abuse, time spent in jail, etc.) as well as structural violence and inequities (e.g., racism, transphobia) on clients’ health and well-being as well as how they engage with services.” Canadian Public Health Association, Centre for Sexuality

Trauma Porn
Definition:
“Trauma porn is media that showcases a group’s pain and trauma in excessive amounts for the sake of entertainment. Trauma porn is created not for the sake of the marginalized group, but instead to console or entertain the non-marginalized group. It also has the tendency to cater to the non-marginalized person’s ego versus actually helping the marginalized person depict what life is really like for them. It can also serve little to no point to the overall plot (see: Adrian Mellon’s death in “IT II”) and be used as a device to jolt the audience.” Brittany Johnson
